Georgia Day One 18 Jan 03

Mike and I had walked around the practice map the day before, so I knew the woods were very open but the map contours were vague, at best. I was determined to have a clean run, and not to make mistakes on straight lines or contours.

It was a long hilly course. I manged to navigate pretty well, with two exceptions. On one control, I contoured around a hill. The reentrants were not mapped correctly, and I was looking for a cliff on the side of a reentrant. I took the control very slowly, but I was still confused about where I was. I had just stopped to look at my map, when someone walked right under my feet and punched the control! I counted this as a missed control, since I didn't navigate to it cleanly.

On a second control, I was pulled over to a parallel reentrant by another runner. I lost less than 2 minutes, but I still consider it a miss.

I did a very good job of moving continuously, even up the tough hills. I also did a good job of staying on a straight line, and picking out route choices. I finished second in my class, second female on the green course. About 90 minutes on a 6.2K course. I almost met my goal of 1.75X Mike's time, but just missed (1.76).

MT = 466/1000
