Redemption! I did a practice course at Wyandotte, and I concentrated on orienteering the whole time! The woods were usual Kansas thick, but a dream compared to yesterday. My legs were dead tired, so my time was slow (90 minutes). I also took it a bit easy at each control, stopping for a drink of water before moving on. I saw some wildlife, including deer and an owl. Overall, a very nice day in the woods. I was pleased with my concentration and orienteering.

I wish I could figure out why one can read a map well one day, and on another day, it makes no sense. I know that I had no concentration yesterday, and that's the main cause for my poor orienteering. However, there were times when I just couldn't make sense of the map. I'd stop and stare at the map just to understand contours and trails; I couldn't glance at the map and understand it. However, I did that today. Obviously I know how to interpret the map; I just wish that skill didn't disappear at inappropriate times!

I wore my HR rate monitor yesterday and today. I don't try to keep my HR at any particular zone during an O meet; I just go as hard as I can. At the Ernie Miller event, my average HR was 160 (~90% max). I lost the data from yesterday. Today my average HR was 145 (~80%) because I was walking slowly on tired legs. I spent about 40% of the time at 70-80% max; the rest at 80-90%.
