Mike and I went to Michigan this past weekend for the SMOC meet. I ran on this terrain at the '95 US Champs and liked it. It is relatively flat with intricate detail and lots of swamps. I enjoyed the trip, even though I HATE SWAMPS!

On day one, I ran 79 minutes on a 4.7k course. The course winner ran 45 minutes. I had a relatively good run. I was navigating OK and I was actually jogging a lot on the trails. But I may have pushed the pace too much, because I got tired at the end and made a big boom. I went from #7 to #9. I had to go back to #8, then #9, through thick green vegetation that was mostly swamp. Did I mention that I HATE SWAMPS? Poor Nancy, who caught up with me just before my boom, had to listen to me rant and rave about my mistake and swamps for two whole legs.

On day two, I ran the 4.9k course in 75 minutes. I don't know the winner's time, but I assume it was around 40-45 minutes. Today was the reverse of yesterday: great navigation, but slow movement. I was tired, my legs felt dead, and I rarely jogged. However, my navigation was (mostly) sharp. I anticipated what I would see, and knew exactly where my control would be. I made a few small route execution errors near the end as I got tired, but no big mistakes. I was pleased with my run.

It was a fun social meet, as well. Dick, Nancy, Sharon, Mikell, Nadim and Peggy were there. Mikell shared a hotel room with Mike and I, and brought his all-important lap top along with him. I went out to dinner with D&N on Saturday night while Mike and Mikell stayed in the hotel room, eating pizza and listening to internet coverage of Tio Mila. When I checked out of the hotel, we had a 50 cent charge for a 420 minute local call!
